Another main inspiration for our film opening is the title sequence from 'This Is England'. This title sequence comprises of a series of real life footage symbolic of the 1980's, such as clips of Margaret Thatcher and 80's culture, giving the audience an immediate feel for the time period in which the film is set.
Additionally, the sequence uses an upbeat 80's song as a non-diegetic soundtrack, further helping to establish the time period and reinforcing the period feel of the piece. At times, this music fits with the feel and emotions expressed in the visuals, and at other times it can be considered highly contrapuntal, particularly when the visuals are depicting graphic scenes of war and violence.
The inspiration we took from this opening comes mainly in the form of the music, as we feel a vibrant track with connotations of the 80's period would help to enhance the portrayal of the time period. Additionally, we hope to incorporate YouTube clips of the time period, to further establish the time in which the piece is set, as well as creating a more visually appealing piece.
